I've noticed (because it's streaked my brand new paintjob :x ) that my gas cap leaks a little bit especially when full (duh), or under heavy braking. Is this normal, or what?

No, they shouldn't leak, but most of the seals on them don't get replaced as the original paint is usually of better quality than the home job so it doesn't show the streaks. Seal is probably 25 years old.

Did the same thing myself. Brand new paint job, scrooged on the top clear coat and a week later, streaks.

Top clear coat should be a 2-pack rather than enamel or laquer. Will stand up better to the odd spill.

If it's only the clear coat(providing you put one on) then you may get away with some fine sandpaper and rub it back and repolish. If it was me, I'd rub it back and redo the clear again with 2-pack.

It's a paint with a hardener mix. The hardener gives a more durable finish. To be honest, it's probably best done professionally, but can be done at home.

Get that tank seal replaced at your earliest possible opportunity Jason. It can be a hazard to you if you are ever in a position where the bike ends up on it's side and the fuel starts leaking (Kaboom!).

I've been looking for a gas cap seal, but I cannot find one available (sites say "Out of Stock" or "Discontinued").

Anyone have a connection to a site that sells new seals for an 1981 XJ650H Maxim?

Bought two at the dealer here about 3 years ago. Have you checked them out yet? How 'bout OldBikeBarn?
