working on a 81 xj550 that I picked up a month or so ago. Last night I had the bike firing up off of spray through the carbs so I decided to put the tank on and add gas. As soon as I put the gas in the tank it started to run out the vent of the petcock, regardless what position I turn the petcock too. Any suggestions, replace petcock ?

your diaphram is leaking , it is not a vent it is a vacuum port.

Thanks for the speedy replies. This is my first bike, so I am sure there will be other questions along the way. I will get a rebuild kit ordered later this week. Anxious to hear it run so can start to move forward with the fork rebuilds, brake line and pad replacement, checking the valve shims, and I am going to pull it all down and give it a fresh coat of paint.
