Fuel delivery issues.

    Recently purchased 81 xj550, seemed to running fine, as fuel burned off below half tank, bike would start missing then shut off. Could get it run with peacock set to prime. Return to place of purchase, mechanics replaced vacuum line and cleaned carbs, seemed to remedy problem. After running fuel below half tank again, same problem. Any ideas?

    Could be that the fuel cap is internally plugged up, and not able to "vent" the tank. Next time it happens, pop open the gas cap slightly and see if that relieves the problem. If so, the cap will need to be taken apart and cleaned, or replaced:

    if what Chacal suggested does not work.
    try setting petcock to reserve ? you have 3.4 gallon tank around 2.5 gallon gone it will need to be set to res (forward position) to keep running.
    it could also be the "fuel screen on the petcock inside the tank is crapped below that fuel level if it will not run on reserve.
    how much gasoline do you put back in tank ? you say half tank 1.75 gallons? or 2.5 gallons?
