plan on replacing the old, possible original fuel filter on my 81' xj650. Is there a certain style I should get? Certain size? Will the ones at the auto parts store in the small engine section work?

There was no filter originally, just a plastic screen on the petcock, and steel screens under the float needle seats.

You want a 1/4 barb on each end, sintered bronze filter element, and it has to be physically small enough to fit in the small amount of space under the tank. User Chacal sells just the thing, or if you have time to wait a few weeks for shipping you can buy http://www.ebay.com/itm/121438291968?_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK:MEBIDX:IT I let Len (Chacal) know about these, but am not sure if he is carrying them or not.

Any style that fits is better than no style

I forgot to add last night that paper element filters for small engines generally will not flow enough fuel to keep up with demand at highway speeds.

This is what you are looking for. they are $4 to $5 and Chacal probably has them as well as Amazon and Ebay. I even found one with a 90% turn.

Interesting. That looks similar to the one I've been using since the spring (see link in my above post). What does the filter element look like?

the one I used had a paper filter
funny story.. it was after I did my winter rebuild and repainting and such
spent 3 days trying to start the bike
    would not start
I removed the paper filter from the fuel filter and it fired right away
it just would not let enough fuel through to run
    loved the look thou
I now am using the see thru plastic one and it works great
