    Hi All,

New to the forum, my name is Roger, 31 years old from Amsterdam Holland.

I just rebuilt the top end of my '85 XJ550 and decided I need some more stopping power. On Ebay I found a pretty mint condition set from a FZ6, doe anyone know if this would fit a XJ550?

Any other tips on what breaking system to go for would also be much appreciated!

    Cheers,
    Roger.

    Welcome!!

Heres a good thread for some info you're looking for:

    http://xjbikes.com/Forums/viewtopic/p=282719.html

As well as - the typical "upgrade" for the forks/brakes of 550 seca's is the fzr600 front end - as it runs dual discs.

Welcome once again, and update your signaure with your bike info, helps a bunch! :)

Thanks again for the link mtnbikecrazy55, but actually I just want to fit the brakes on the existing forks.
    Any thoughts?

First Gen FZ6 calipers are a common mod for FZ570's.
My XS400 Seca (Mini-XJ - same calipers) appears to have the same size caliper mounting holes, however it's under a tarp, on a stand, behind a few tons of 'crap' in my garage right now. When I can get that out of the way I'll cross-check to see if the calipers have same/similar mounting. (I have about a dozen FZ750 calipers for some reason.) If they do, you're good. You just have to remember it's only the 1st gen FZ6 calipers will fit. (Dual piston on one side, 'floating' design.)

Now a REAL upgrade would be a set of FJ600 forks (dual discs) AND the newer calipers from the FZ6 with a brake master from an R6. Just sayin'.
(Eyeballs FJ600 front end in corner of office).
    :)

Didn't Euro-spec 550 have dual disc to begin with?

Yep, I've got a dual disc setup as it is. Stainless lines were added by the PO. But now the piston in the left caliper froze in lock position, and I've wanted to upgrade the brakes for a while so now is the time :)

I asked the seller of the FFZ6 brakes to measure the mounting hoes but no reply, so if any of you guys happen to know I'll be a happy camper!

    Cheers

I know my upgrade is going to be fz600 forks(36mm as they fit the current triple tree) and fz600 brakes. Fzr600 equipment required too many modifications.

Just use the triple tree from the FZ600 along with the forks and everything will bolt up... You will however have to have Clip-ons for handlebars now and you will have to modify your throttle cable length.

Wait on second thought, You are saying that the forks fit the triple tree's. I thought for sure that the seca triple trees were for smaller dia fork tubes. If the fz600 forks fit, then you should be good to go without changing the triple trees.. Sorry my bad if its wrong... If you do get them to bolt up, you will have some serious fun with the stoppies on the seca :)

XJ550 Seca models (North America) use 35mm fork tubes.

I used the FZ triples and drilled my mounts for the handle bars. Then got the clamps from the radian.

FZ600 rev-counter taken out of its shell and mounted racing style.

what modifications do I need to do in terms of an axle(fz600 front forks so 15mm holes on each end)?

In doing research on possible caliper conversions, is the consensus here that matching fork tube diameters mean calipers can be interchanged?

I think that isn't correct, so I'm missing some bit of info. I know the XS400 Seca uses the same caliper as my XJ750 -- albeit with only one side, unlike my dual -- but would that FZ750 / FZ6 (first gen) be bike-to-bike compatible for a swap -- as long as I got a different MC?

I've picked up on the need for single side piston(s) & floating caliper style. Otherwise, no problems...?

Would this exact swap work for the 750 Seca as well?

matching for tube diameters only means that the fork tubes will fit in opposite bikes.

THAT does not take into account whether the wheel axle is behind, in-line, or in front of, the center line of the forks. That will alter whatever the steering geometry is, if it's different, or if the fork length is different........

I don't think it will fit on the 750 seca, as I believe the 750 has larger diameter tubes............but then again, I didn't go check the chart--just going by what I remember seeing.

But then again, if you change the triple clamp (as long as you get the right bearings to match the spindle diameter, and the land diameter) you'd probably be good to go...... though you still have to consider the steering geometry (trail?)

Hi all, thanks for your replies!
I never changed the brakes in the end, a friend of mine refurbished the calipers instead.

    Cheers,
    Rogier.

I must admit my calipers are good enough for the xj550 after a rebuild. If you have second thoughts then NK Racing in the UK can help.

    Linky: http://www.nkracing.co.uk/n3.html

The adaptor brackets for the Yam RD350LC will fit straight on and you could use the awesome bluespot calipers.

FatnFast do you happen to know what adapters would work with a XJ750? I have been following this thread out of curiosity because I have a swap I want to do on my Xj750 seca. Would love to get some better calipers on my bike.

If your calipers are identical to the xj550 ones then NK Racing can provide you with a pair of adaptors. You just need to ask for a pair of brackets for a Yamaha rd350lc. Have a look at his site and decide what calipers you want to use. Yam R1 bluespots are a common choice over here.
Both the xj550 and rd350lc share the same standard Yam calipers and discs :) .
I know the XJ750 also uses these calipers dependant on year/model.
