Im currently rebuilding my maxim x after a nice forced meeting with a guard rail doing 95km/h. so it has been in the back of my mind for a while why not just drop the whole fzr1000 cylinders/rods/pistons/head/ etc on has anyone done any research into this.

I remember reading somewhere that when trying to transplant the FZR engine into the Maxim-X, the engineers ran into a few problems. First, the FZR cylinders are canted forward at a 45 degree angle; this allowed for the use of downdraft carbs, and the passages in the head allowed for the air/fuel mixture to have a straight shot at the intake valves.

Problem was, the styling of the Maxim didn't allow for such a configuration. They ended up keeping the existing bottom end, which tilts the cylinders forward at only 14 degrees, and it was necessary to tweak the head assembly to accept a set of side-draft carbs instead.

Long story short; the carbs most likely won't fit.

    Lots of problems with it.

    I'm not saying it's impossible....just not easy.
    So far:
Crank won't fit> primarily the drive gear is a different pitch and diameter than the X and won't mesh with the clutch
Cylinders don't fit in the case without significant grinding (done)
Water inlet tubes were a completely different config> need custom water inlets.
FZ head was designed with downdraft carbs so that's a deal killer. I'm hoping the X head will work.
connecting rods are a no-go since the crank won't fit.
No other XJ crank has the right stroke and uses the larger connecting rod bearings that the X (and FZR) used.

I'll post more if I make any progress.
