Maybe I am getting confused reading all these forum posts. I have FZR600 calipers sitting at my house(I dont know if I can use them at this point), I would really like an updated front end with dual brake setup. I was told the FZR600 front end would be a direct swap on to my 82 XJ550 but it turns out the forks are different diameters 36mm vs 38mm(yes I have access to a machine shop). I would rather not custom machine everything. Let me know what the proper way of doing this setup should be.

yes, I searched pretty thoroughly through google and xjbikes.
    Thanks,
    Stu

    Hey Stu -

Late at night and there's studying i ought to be doing, but i thought I'd find you a few links to pick through/over:

    http://xjbikes.com/Forums/viewtopic/p=119837.html

    http://xjbikes.com/Forums/viewtopic/p=337617.html

    http://xjbikes.com/Forums/viewtopic/p=337617.html

This seemed to be the easiest yet:

That is if the calipers are the same, which may not be - Are you looking to just upgrade to dual discs, or moreso make use of the fzr calipers that you already have?

Keep in mind you might also need to swap out the M/C for it to be able to handle the increased stroke volume needed for the dual caliper setup.

    Hope that helps! ;)

After my seca is done, THIS is the next vision for a bike of mine, just beautiful if it was cleaned up and finished a bit more.

That may have been my mentioning of the dual disc setup?

I think you or someone else may have gotten confused on compatible forks. The FZ600 is 36mm like your Maxim. The FZR600 is a completely different bike.

Have you got the 38mm yokes for your "new" forks? maybe worth seeing if you can press an XJ stem into those at all if you really wanted to use the forks.

    Fork Tube Diameter (36mm)
    FZ-600 S/SC/T/TC/U/UC (86-88)
    FJ-600 L/LC/N/NC (84-85)

    Compatible Steering Stems (Bearing Size)
YZF600R 95-00 25x47x15 Upper (Get 1996 or above for cartridge)
    30x55x17 Lower (Get 1997 or above for 98-03 R1, 99-02 R6 Rotors)
    FZR600 89-99 25x47x15 Upper
    30x55x17 Lower
    XJ650 80-83 25x48x15.2 Upper
    30x48x15 Lower
    FZ600 (86-88) 25x48x15.2 Upper
    30x48x15 Lower

Looks like you got your front-end conversion mixed up with a fork swap. To use FZR600 89-99 you need the steering stem with some new bearings. Hope that helps.

Nope haven't gotten anything yet just seeing what would be the best options. looks like I have the wrong brakes(Who wants them!). I'll prob go with FZ-600 front forks since they are 36mm. Now I just have to figure out if the axle will fit.
