I removed my gas tank and petcock for painting. I had about a handful of black crums come out of the tank. It didnt look like rust but, i guess it was. The length of the petcock denotes how much gas is used for reserve correct?

Wonder if it was some rubber from the seal or an old seal?

Anyway you are correct - reserve is determined by the "fuel" position intake height. I have never taken my petcock apart so i don't know if it is adjustable/changeable.

Yep. Take a look at the nylon screen 'standpipe" and you'll notice that the reserve opening goes all the way down while the other side doesn't. They're not adjustable/changeable with the stock parts.

not sure what the stock petcocks look like, but my aftermarket petcock I just saw'd down the tube to make my on larger and reserve smaller.

The petcock screen in my 650j is four inches long, i assumed it would be only about 2 inches. The last time i saw a petcock screen i was 10 years old and my bike was a Honda QA50.The tank was full of 1/8" to 1/4" size black crums.I guess the rust in the tank coagulated forming these crums.
