I am replacing all engine side covers after buffing them. I have all new paper gaskets. Do i use a tacky gasket spray and apply gasket to cover or engine side? Or do i apply gasket to cover and apply a thin layer of oil to it before installing to engine? I have read several ways. If one of the covers need to come off again some day, is there a way to keep it from being stuck on again? About 90% of the gasket material came right off the engine side when removed. Most stuck to the covers. It was alot easier to clean off covers then engine.

I generally use high-tack spray and "glue" them to the covers; then assemble either dry or with a light oiling of the other side. Like you said, it's always easier to remove remnants from a cover than the motor.
