So i've been looking over the forum since I picked up my 81 xj650 as I have a few items to work on. Most recently the starter clutch has started to fail and I'm going to just replace it as the seafoam tricks yielded little results/improvements.

I did find this post regarding the steps for splitting the case, however I wasn't sure as to exactly what gaskets were needed for this work (if any). Any input would be great. I plan on documenting my steps and wills hare the results incase anyone else wants/needs a helpful step by step for this work.

I've done the whole starter clutch thing this year. At the very least you'll need the oil pan gasket. And then some Yamabond or similar for the two crankcase halves.

But remember you have to take off side covers, alternator and other bits and bobs to open her up. I looked at the options and decided to go with a whole gasket kit. Not that expensive and you'll have exhaust and top end gaskets as well. You can change the head gasket at the same time if you have the engine out. Fixing the starter clutch is a great opportunity to refresh other things including starter chain guide, oil nozzle in same vicinity, and I even took out the oil pump and cleaned it up and cleaned the metal filter of crud and small broken plastic bits (starter chain guide!).

It was worth all the blood sweat and tears and cursing in the end.

    In addition:
LockTite 516 or 518 is much easier to work with than Threebond, and will not leave any goobers that can break off and clog oil passages.

You can split the cases without touching the top end, and the top end can be dissasembled with the engine in the frame; so unless the head gasket is currently leaking, it's best to leave it be.

Start a conversaton with Chacal and he will make sure that you get just the gaskets that you need. Buying a full bottom end kit will still leave you short of a few things. The oil nozzle is fairly expensive and the old one should not need replaced unless the alternator chain has worn through to the oil passage; so hold off on ordering one until you've inspected it. I'd do the same with the starter clutch parts; sometimes it's just worn rollers, but the starter housing has been known to crack, so inspection before ordering parts is warranted.

Thanks guys for the responses. Yah, if it ain't broke, I don't want to start taking apart additional sections of the engine (heads). I'll hope to post some status updates here shortly once I have a free weekend to knock this out.

Oh, it's going to take more than one weekend, unless this is all that you plan on doing.
