I used "the right stuff" on mine. I put it on as per the directions and torqued it down. this stuff is what GM uses right from the factory so its good stuff, but expensive- $15 for 1/2 a caulking tube

I use Elmer's Glue to hold the gasket in the alignment channel.
I coat the mating surfaces of the gasket and the head with some "Painted-on" light machine oil.

I tighten the fasteners gradually allowing the gasket to BOTH spread and compress.

    No leaks.

I use the right stuff, works great, makes it a little tricky trying to get the valvecover back off though, but it does what it's suppose to, holds up good to head and oil.

Use pieces of Masking tape to hold the VC gasket in place in it's Valve cover grooves. This assumes those grooves are spotlessly clean??
You can boil an OLD gasket for a half hour.. this will give the old tired rascal new life.. and save some hard earned $$.
But the gasket (in decent condition) needs NO extra Goo regardless of what yr friends claim.

I use a light coating of Permatex Form-A-Gasket non-hardening gasket sealer on both sides of the new gasket -- it's thick like a grease so it'll hold the gasket in place, and seals tight. Rebuilt many engines, and swear by the stuff.

I use the same GM stuff that I use on LS1 corvette. Works pretty darn good.
