The gauge face is faded on the 82 Maxium I'm working on. The speedo has to come apart and I was wondering if anyone has reproduced or found a way to restore the gauge face. It looks like it made of a translucent plastic with the face silk screened on or something. The red on the face has taken the worst of the sun damage but the rest is not too bad.

It's pretty easy to take those apart. The red is famous for fading. Best thing is to find a new face. There are companies that reproduce gauges, but I can' for the life of me find my links for those.

If you need help on taking it apart, pm me and I'll help you through it.

    Try this outfit.

    http://webslingercycles.com/Images/Speedo/index.htm

    Email the Owner

    jkinnikin@wsipc.org

    Ck-out the site.
They make Speedo and Tach faces with DESIGNS.

I'm thinking about sending him my Maxim Gauges this Fall and asking him to use the Tuning Forks Logo on he Speedo and Tack face.

    READ the site info.
You Have to send-in the Gauges already disassembled.
If you send-in Gauges he can use as a template,, ... your new faces are free.

The idea I had in mind for my crapped out gauges was to scan the faces into the computer, use photoshop to create an "outline layer", save as a template, and go nuts using different designs, fonts, and colors. Wouldn't it be cool to have a set of gauge faces that compliment your bike's color?

We used to do this with the old z car gauges, whole lot cheaper than buying aftermarket. Print them out, laminate them, glue them behind the needles, you're done.

I have the electronic tach and semi-circle gauges. I'll be happy to scan in a layer for editing if anyone wants it. May take some time to do, but I will eventually run into a rainy day where my schedule isn't so packed...

You are aware that these gauges are to be illuminated, right? By sticking another decal directly on top of the old, faded decal, you will make it more difficult to see the gauges at night. Just makin you aware of this idea with what I believe your intentions are...

I have contact with a company who can replicate decals for nearly any type of gauge, and they seem to be fairly professional. I ordered some smaller items like an ignition switch decal & handlebar control decals from them. Its a possibility I will be sending them my circular gauge faces (tach & speedometer) for them to reproduce a new decal for me. Long story short, ya just sand off the old faded one until its clean and "see-through", and apply the new decal onto the plastic circular backing and its good as new.

I'm having the opposite problem with the gauges on my Maxim.

    They aren't round.
    The bottoms are flattened.

The Gauge face is White Lettering on Black background.
The face is washed-out and letting light bleed through the black area.

Trying to remove the Indicator Needle from the Speedo broke the Needle leaving a stub.
I repaired the Needle and quit.

But, now I want to a few things:

    • Replace the Speedo and Tach with Chrome Round "120" mph Instruments.
    • Reface mine if the first plan don't work.
    • Find a "Single" -- Multi-function Upgrade with something "Digital"
