I have a 1982 Xj650 Maxim that I bought a few months ago and am close to getting road-worthy. My questions is: The Speedometer/Odometer read only in Kilometers. I am wondering if it is possible to swap this out with a US spec speedo so that I won't have to constantly do the conversion in my head to keep within the speedlimit.

Also, i have seen some car guys make up a new label for the face of the gauge (usually to go with a "white faced" look). I am wondering if it is possible to do this on a Maxim dual round gauge pod.

One last question, my side covers say "Special" on them. I have not found anything online about an XJ650 Special model so far. Do you guys think that thing could go along with the Metric Spec Speedo, and maybe it was a Canadian or European thing?

This site has been a lifesaver so far. I really appreciate teh way that everyone here seems so eager to help each other out. Thanks for any help that you guys could provide!

You can swap it out with any 80-83 Maxim gauge cluster - so grabbing a US imperial version off of ebay is quite possible. The hard part comes if you want your odometer to match. Then you'll have to run the imperial replacement one to have the same mileage as the metric. Possible - just a pain. Not entirely sure of the legality of it, or if something special's involved or not.

It's also possible to replace or recover the gauge faces - the only issue is that you'll have to pop off the needles to do it properly, and I'm not sure if it's possible to get them back on exactly - or even if it matters.

You could just add some red marks to the cover at 30mph and 55mph and just guess from there...

I've seen a "Special" Maxim before up here in Canada - I think it was the 1980 year though, but the side covers for the 80-83 models are interchangeable. Sounds like those are just replacements.
