So i bought a 81 XJ750J back in April hoping to ride all summer, various queries and quests later i got it to run not even an hour ago, idles at 1100, revs with almost no delay, charges the battery, all seems well, cept for this little wire that has no mate, its a white wire with a narrow red stripe on either side, its the male end, lacking the other half, its back under the seat behind the fuse box and air filter, right by the tail light and turn signal hook ups, i have searched for a missing connection, with no luck, any ideas where it goes? seems to run without it, there have been no alterations to the electrical systems, besides the battery warning light staying on (no sensor came with the bike) but i want to drive out any gremlins before they raise a problem.

    Thanks in advance

    Aaron

That wire used to run to a Battery Fluid Level Sensor.
    The Sensor is obviously history!

There seems to be two schools of thought about what to do.
I'm taking the "Add a resistor and run it to a switched power source"

Others seem to content to just hook it up to +12 Volts.

    The debate will begin shortly.
    I'll be right in it!

I'm going to pass along the info to have the present owner hook-up the wire to a switched 12 Volt source after adding a resistance value that Member Robert says should be added to satisfy the Sensor for the display.

An excellent drawing of this wiring work-up is in his Gallery.
