After fitting new clutch springs and bearings to the clutch, replacing the oil pump drive chain and cleaning out the oil pump I took the 650 for a test drive. After about 100 km or so it started to developed a bad clunking sound. Switched it off pretty well straight away and and hitched a lift home on the back of a ute. Pulled the clutch out and found the bolt holding the sprocket on to the oil pump was all but off. Hence the Clunk I guess! I then removed the sump and found what appears to be copper or brass chunks in the bottom (they are non metalic). I first thought it was from something rubbing from the sprocket being loose but the chain, sprocket and the pump housing are all un damaged. Looking closely at the bits its possible it could be a washer but from were? Before I go tearing things apart has anyone any ideas on where to look or may be what it is?

That's scary......you might want to print out a blow-up picture from a parts manual or online diagram and take another look while checking off parts that are visable. Just seems more than ironic that this developed RIGHT AFTER you reinstalled a major component. I'm thinking that removing the entire clutch might be a good starting point......please be sure to post up when you find the culprit!

    Hi Jeff
Your not wrong its scary. The clutch was my first port of call. Have pulled it apart but nothing there. I have been going through the workshop manual to try and think of what it could be so your idea is a good one. will keep you posted

    Thanks

It could be something internal to the oil pump?

How about some pictures of the shrapnel?
