    Hi,

I started to grind down the bolt head for the oil filter cover of my 82 750 Yamaha maxim. I'm using my ryobi 18v battery operated drill with a stone grinder attachment. After recharging / changing the battery out 3-4 times and going through 2 almost 3 grinding heads and around 3 hours of total grinding I'm down to it being flat and no more than 1/32 of an inch to go, maybe less. It feels like it is taking forever. I've been using a round flat headed stone. Would you suggest a different grinding attachment? I know the article said "take it for the team", but it feels way worse than that.

    Thanks, - Wade

But since you're so close to being done, just carry on with what you have.

Thanks for the suggestions. I will probably carry on with the drill..... Would you suggest a different shaped grinder like a ball, concave, etc? Instead of flat?

No. They will all work equally well for what you are doing.

grind down the bolt head for the oil filter cover? i dont think ive been around long enough to know why someone would do this, but if you have lots of material to gring away, perhaps use a cut off wheel first and remove the brunt of the material that way first? then claen with grinder?

Because the bolt got rounded and no other special sockets work.... There is a forum somewhere here that I read.

^ exactly. Sometimes corrosion is at work between the bolt head and the oil filter housing too. Quite often it's apparent that the filter hasn't been changed in decades.

I changed the oil every year since I got it. What I didn't know is that I needed to pay attention to the torque when tightening the bolt which most likely added to the bolt head getting rounded.

That'll do it too. Inspect the threads when you get it apart.
