Not to start a flame war, but I am wondering if Gumout carb cleaner (spray) is not very good. I bought a second set of carbs to clean and rebuild (82 xj750). I have had the jets soaking in cleaner overnight with no effect. I can chip the varnish off the outside with my thumbnail, but that of course doesn't help inside. Also, it is not touching the stains on the aluminum. like the risers the jets screw into.

    What do y'all recommend?

B-12 Chemtool is what I use.
I haven't heard any complaints from Gumout.
My opinion is that it all burns when you get shot in the eye.

Soak the bodies in heat pinesol or lemon juice for a couple of hours. Works wonders. Of course remove the brass and rubber bits

Brake cleaner is stonger than carb cleaner, in my opinion.
20 years ago, STP made a wicked carb cleaner, then the formula changed.
Straight Methanol will make you blind.
Wine is fine, but Liquor's quicker. . .

I showed the jets to a mechanic I just met, and he said chemtool as well. Shoulda known why the gumout was 2 fer 1 haha.

wow -- chemtool rocks wombats over gumout. I spent literally an hour scrubbing stuff that rinsed off with the B-12.
And props to me for getting those freaking bowl drain screws out. Is there a club or something? Secret handshake? I guess I don't get the tat until the carbs are installed and micro-tuned *big grin*.

I'll second the Chemtool comparison. Beats Gum-out hands down. Now if I could just find it here again... seems to have vanished off the shelves here in the last two years or so. I'm stuck with brake cleaner (Snap is my prefered brand of that stuff).

Years ago there used to be some stuff in a gal can with a basket in it.
When you got it on your hands it tingled (bad stuff)
It rinsed off with water and then blew dry. I used it for years on carbs, then I had Fuel Inj for years..... then I got my XJ.
    No such stuff any more!
I bought some Berryman Chemtool in a gal can that looked like the old stuff, but it's JUNK!!!!
    DONT WASTE YOUR MONEY$$$$$
Maybe the stuff in the little cans is different, the Gal is trash.

The gallon can should be B-9, an emulsive type cleaner. Not the same animal as the B-12. Still, it won't harm the aluminum bodies of the carbs and rinses with water. I've had so/so results with it. I'll stick to alcohol and an ultra-sound bath.
