I'm getting a little paranoid of my stock headlight. After riding the other night, I found that I could see much farther than about 15 or 20 feet in front of me.

Has anyone done a conversion from the stock sealed lens to an aftermarket lens that accepts H4 bulbs? It seems that the 7 inch ones are pretty common, but I didn't know if thats the same size as a 82' XJ650 maxim?

All you need is the is a headlight assembly off of an 83 maxim. It uses the same bracket as the 650 so the headlights will swap out.

Yes - lots of us have. Yes - 80-83 650 Maxim's all used the 7" round headlight.

As long as you stick close to the stock wattage of bulb (55/60), you should even be okay with the stock wiring.

If you want to go with a much higher wattage, or if you just want the best possible light, you can install aftermarket wiring kits that improve the bulb output as well.

    You guys are awesome.

Sometimes I feel lazy asking things like that. Though you probably just saved me a whole afternoon 'cause I can just pick up the parts on the way home from work and get it done in one fell swoop.

    Thanks.

so they stopped using the sealed bean in 83? Good to know. Perhaps I will move to an 82 maxim 650 headlight as my 82 550 Maxim headlight is a sealed beam, 7" round headlight.

Yep, at least on the 750. I changed mine to an H4 which much better than the stock H3 or a sealed beam.

My 81 was a 7" round sealed beam as well. Bought a replacement lens (not spectacular though - wish I could've afforded the Bosch) and a good H4 bulb.

Well, I did the conversion. Picked up a 7 inch Candlepower Replacement headlight that uses an H4 bulb. I also got a Sylvania Silverstar Bulb.

Anyone want the Candlepower bulb that I have now? It's just a little dimmer than the Silverstar, but I figured it's just going to go unused, and I'll ultimately forget about it. It looks like you can get them for about $18 online, so I'll sell it for $10 plus shipping. Just PM me.

MiCarl, that rounded H-4 headlight at JCwhitney would replace my stock 81's headlight, just a simple take out put in??????
