    New Owner question - I need to replace the grips on my bike as the current ones are disintegrating and the length I measured was 4 3/4". But I can't find grips that short on the various websites I have been frequenting. Are there grips that have variable lengths (cut them?). Does anyone then a good place to find grips that fit these bikes?

    I have a set of 5 inch cruiser style grips on mine. They are a little thicker for easier grip. Almost any 7/8" bar grip should work. If you want close to original then you should look for around the 5" mark. Otherwise E-Bay probably has something. I would try Dennis Kirk.

    Here's some!:

    Handlebar Grips:

    hb23) OEM and aftermarket HANDLEBAR GRIPS restore that like-new feel to your steering. All original grips use a soft rubber grip pattern that is similar to the original patterns used on each bike, and the right side grip does include the plastic throttle tube.

    Aftermarket grips come in a matched right and left set, and the right grip does not include the throttle tube.

    HCP1693 Aftermarket left and right side black cushion-foam Handlebar Grips. Soft solid black rubber hand grip with polished chrome end caps. Very nice looking and comfortable. Overall length 6-1/8", fits all XJ-series handlebars. Pair:
    $ 12.95

    HCP4428 OEM left side Handlebar Grip Assembly. Fits all XJ550 models, and all XJ650 models except Turbo.
    $ 11.95

    HCP4429 OEM right side Handlebar Grip Assembly, includes the throttle tube. Fits all XJ550 models, and all XJ650 models except Turbo.
    $ 17.95

    Don't forget you can adjust anything you need to on the handlebars to allow you a bit more or less "room" for the grips. I personally prefer the old-style "Gran Tourismo" grips and immediately change to them on any bike I own. You can pretty much use anything that is made for 7/8" handlebars, and you have a lot of choices out there between OE and the aftermarket. Don't need to worry too much about length.
