Hi- New member here. I just acquired a non-running 1982 XJ 650 Maxim. This is the same model as my first bike 35 years ago, and I am hoping to get it running in stock condition.

It came with a Vetter Quicksilver fairing with integrated headlight and turn signals. When I removed the fairing I found a tightly wrapped black vinyl bag with a whole bunch of wires, harnesses, etc., strapped to the fork brace.

Where do all these wires go? Are they supposed to get stuffed into the headlight bucket (which I am missing)? I bought an LED headlight assembly based on previous experience with dim lighting, but there is no way all those wires are fitting into the new housing. Is there an accepted solution, like a waterproof box? Or should I just make another vinyl wrapper?

Yes, all that wiring was stuffed in the original headlight shell. When it is in there JUST RIGHT there is seemingly lots of room for it. With your new LED light, which I expect does not live in an original style shell I guess your next best solution is the Vetter vinyl bag. That came with the fairing for just that purpose. Personally I like the Quicksilver fairing on the XJ's. It is just the right size, not too heavy and offers much better wind protection than Yamaha's more swoopy looking but less effective fairings.

If you want to try an OEM bucket let me know. Could get you one for shipping cost.

Dan Gardner, I would love to take you up on your offer of an OEM bucket. I come to Minneapolis every 4-6 weeks, or perhaps mailing is easier.

The new LED light is mounted in a shell, but there is not nearly enough room for all the wires.

Re: the Quicksilver fairing- it is probably the lightest, smallest "full" fairing that is useful for longer trips. If anyone wants it, let me know.
