So originally, the headlight would turn on, but if you wiggled the key (such happens in normal travel) they would turn off. The fork lock wouldn't work either. The ignition switch looked like someone hit it with an axe. No exaggeration.

So I figured it needed to be replaced. When I took it off, the ignition switch housing was broken in half and looks like it was semi repaired with fiberglass and zip ties. (It did not work too well.)

I replaced it with one from my parts bike. I did notice that the blue wire from ignition was jumped to the blue/white wire on the harness from the clutch handle assembly. (This isn't the case on my other bikes.) So I didn't re-jump it.

Now the bike fires just fine. Rides fine. Signals and brake light work. Headlight doesn't work.

I replaced all the fuses... ALL of them.

I also checked with a multimeter. No voltage with the ignition "on." However the side markers are on.

    Please help.

Maybe the control is from another bike. I would take the control apart and trace the wires. According to my diagram, the lights/dimmer switch should have 1 yellow/red and 1 blue going to the harness(in the headlight bucket), and 1 green and 1 yellow going to the headlight.

Here's a better view of what was going on.

Here's the control. It's the same on both bikes. I assumed it's the stock one.

So for grins and giggles, I jumped the wires together. It works now. Which is strange since that doesn't match any diagram I have.

I have no experience with the 700 but is it possible that the po had to jump the headlight because of a bad relay?

Glad it's working. That harness plug is for the ignition, but the wire colors are different from the wiring diagram from the Yamaha manual.
The diagram shows red from battery, brown carries switched current to starter button and black to ground.
WTF either this diagram is worthless or who knows what's going on? At least it's working now.

I'm assuming because the ignition switch was so jacked up the PO did some wiring "magic" to get it to turn on. If I want it to work as stock I'll probably have to pull the entire harness from the parts bike.
