    The headlight bracket on this 81 I'm working is badly rusted and has a broken off mount bolt in it. I have the fork ears, bucket, and turn signal lights from a XS in my parts pile along with the Yamaha lower triple tree cover and all the hardware. Has anyone tried to use this headlight and mount system on the XJ? I know it would no longer be true to breed but it might look nice.

    On a sort of related note;
    I'm working on my '82 XJ650J Maxim and the headlight was broken when I bought it. The previous owner handed me the retaining rings but no screws.

    My question - is there a way to use the Yamaha part #s to determine the sizes of all of these headlight bolts & screws? The local dealership wants nearly $2 for each of these and it just seems that a metric panhead screw should cost about .15 cents - IF I knew the length, size, etc.

    Anybody know Yamaha's naming conventions system for screws and bolts on this bike?

    Thanks!

    by the way - I also picked up a 7" sealed beam bulb from DennisKirk.com - so I'm hoping I can use it. less than $9 vs $29 from the dealer.

    Ya, Dennis Kirk rocks when it comes to after market stuff. I'm fortunate to live 60 miles from the Scratch& Dent store, so I get my stuff really cheap.
    Anyways...
    You can make just about anything fit if you try hard enough and have the correct tools. I changed my stock square headlight (Seca) to a round Kawasaki round headlight mounted on chrome braces off of a Suzuki.
    Also, the 5" and 7" sealed beams are the same size as the old round automotive headlights and are usually pretty cheap at most auto stores. You can get them in standard or Halogen too. Just a thought. >PD<
