Hi everyone, been lurking for a week or so and thought it time i introduce myself and tell my mini story.

My name is Ken. Im a college student and have owned a few street bikes in the past. Since selling my CBR a couple years ago and having a few extra dollars again i couldn't resist the urge and had to get a bike. Didn't have a huge budget but wasn't really picky so i hit the local craigslist adds looking to spend under 2000 dollars. I found an xj in great shape about an hour away and ended up getting it for 1300. The bike ran great and looked decent, a little paint worn off on the tank where it appears somebody fixed some dents with body filler but not too bad. The guy didn't know too much about it, he had just bought it the year before but needed the money so was forced to sell.

Anyways, I got home and started doing a little research which led me to find this site, which buy the way is great. I had no idea there were so many people with these bikes with so much interest in them. After a little searching I figured out (which im sure you all know) that my 1983 xj900 is pretty uncommon in the States. I was kind of surprised, and even more surprised that the seller never mentioned that! I was a little skeptical as this guy had fixed up some small odds and ends on the bike and who knows what he replaced. Could have a 750 engine for all I know. I went to my garage and wrote down the VIN and did a little more research. Sure enough, I had a 1983 xj900, #643 to roll out of the factory headed to the U.S., and matching frame and engine VIN's with clean title! I don't get this lucky that often, especially when purchasing vehicles lol so I thought I would share. It may not sound like much but I was pretty stoked and think I might do a mini restoration to put some things back to original including the paint. Any thoughts on this?

Im pretty busy with school so I may not post often but Im sure I will be back fairly frequently for some reading. Sorry for the long post, I included a pic (I think it worked) because I couldn't fit the whole thing as my avatar. Take care and ride safe this summer :D

Welcome, Ken, your bike looks great (for a small picture), I think it would be good to re-paint as original, that blue is way nicer than the maroon & black. Wiz.

Thanks everyone, I think the pic i added was the one that i was trying to shrink to fit in my avatar plus it was taken with my phone lol. I will have to get a better one before/if I ever decide to paint.

wiz - It looks kind of bluish in the pic but it's really black. I agree I kind of like that scheme and may just repaint that same color in the winter or something. Im a little confused though, was the original color scheme maroon? I thought that may be the case because I read on another thread that every single 1983 sent to the States was originally red. Since it is not original and has definitely been messed with I wouldn't feel too bad just painting it what I think looks good. I was almost thinking Yamaha blue with white tuning forks on the tanks but not sure if that would look cheesy or not.

it was a dark red with some black stripes... though I gotta be honest and say i dont like the stock paintjob... i do like you black and I like the sounds of blue even better... look at wizards gallery, he's got 2 blue 900's

omg.. I just noticed where you're from.. i knwo where that 900 was.. he was selling it for 1500, and he's from bad axe... i posted the link here.

You may want to look over your bike... i was there late summer and he didn't have that bike... he has 3 seca 750's though... so i assume he knows about xjs...

We have quite a few members in Michigtan, dwcopple lives in bay city, dfknoll lives in frankenmuth, I'm from elkton, bigfitz is from capac, lt.Dave is somewhere close to fitz, (sorry dave)...

Where do you go to college? I go to Michigan tech... but anyways, i'm not the greatest source of info.. but here's my # 1-989-551-4801.. lemme know if you need anything or want to ride :D

You would be right that's the guy lol. Ya he reminded me of the type that fixes bikes up and sells them, which I usually don't l
ike. He did tell me he got it last year and put a couple little things on it like blinker module wasn't working etc. If you can tell me anything I should watch out for though that would be great. I have gone to svsu and going to Ferris next fall.

If you want to see what the red/black bike would look like, go to my gallery and take a peek. Personally, I think the red/black ones look HOT. Personal taste. Welcome aboard. I'll get your info into the 900rk list.
