Well my first bike in fourteen years is a 82 XJ750K so I thought I would get registered and say hello!

I rode for about eight years from snow to snow and stopped riding after a close call was followed by a friends accident.

Here I am fourteen years, a marriage and two kids later - back in the saddle!

My bike has about 17,000 miles, starts every time and runs like a clock.

Paint is messed and the turn signals look like they came from Home Depot, but considering I paid a little over a grand for a solid frame and engine I am very happy so far.

I will post some picks after I get done skipping work to practice my turns and eights :)

Thanks for setting up the site,

    Jim

    Good to have you!

I started posting here a few months back and I'm glad I did. There are a number of people here with a wealth of knowledge waiting to be shared.

I'm still learning the ins and outs of my 82' 750Maxim so I don't have much input to share but I try where I can!

JPXJ, welcome to the gang. We're always happy to hear of folks rescuing worthy metal from the scrap pile. Good on you, I expect your efforts will not have to be much to polish a fine machine out of that gem.

Fourteen years! And I thought my four year stint was tough. Welcome back dude. :) Don't sweat the paint, I got my custom paint done for $214.68. Some here have done their own and teh results are impressive. I think Richard's (jdrich48) is the best so far. But Caryweaver just painted one red and it is a good contender. You can check these out in the user galleries for inspiration.

Thanks All - great to be back!

Now I need to search for speedometer posts - mine seems like it has the MPH and KMH reversed! (Going 80 says 40) It may just be getting used to the speed again...

Welcome JPXJ. About 1 month ago I spray painted my car fender out of the spray can. It was Acrylic enamel paint but it didn't have a nice shine to it. So, I followed by a clear coat also from a spray can and the results are outstanding! Trick is to be steady and patient not go get any runs...

Okay - between work and trying to sell my house I copped out and took Betsy to the shop. She needed fork seals (one - but I had both done) and new rubber in back (dry rot). I think the worst part isn't the cash - it's not knowing exactly how may hours are left till she's back! (Guy said today)

Get out and ride for me!

I know what you mean JP, I bought my maxim x back in march, It too only has 17,000 miles on it. The bike ran, but not perfect. It had quite a few flaws that I wanted to take care of before I put it out on the road. It needed new plugs, new battery, new tires, new fork seals, dents taken out of the tank and repaint the whole bike. Ive got three quarters of that list done and the bike still isnt on the road yet, but like you I have a wife and two kids and time isnt something I have a lot of.(Believe me, I wish that I had more) Ive had a three year break from riding and seriously cant wait to get back in the saddle. I dont know how you handled 14 years! I hoping to get my bike done by the 1rst of August. I'm tired of seeing it unfinished and under the tarp I have it under(I dont have a garage). I thought about taking a few days off from work to "get er done", but I think I'll save those days for when she is ready to ride. So my riding season wont start till about August. Any how WELCOME ABOARD! I'm sure you will find answers to most of your questions on this great site, and others you can share your experiences with as well!

I used to ride a Virago and missed ½ the riding season one year because I wanted to make my bike run perfect. If I remember correctly, it had a hesitation problem around 3000RPMs. I’ve learned very important lesson that year. If my bike runs and it’s safe to ride then ride it. Fix the other items during the off season

Iknow... thats what I should of done Sno, hind sights 20/20. I know when I'm finished piecing this baby back together I'll be a happy man. I just hope the carbs havent gummed up sitting there all spring plus where it sat all winter. Before I took the tank and every thing else off I did let the bike run and even drove it a little with some stabilizer and carb cleaner in the tank. Ihope this helps keep some varnish from forming. We'll see? If I had a garage, she'd be all done by now

Mark the mechanic called - Betsy comes home Monday with new rubber, fork seals and a NYS sticker.

It's going to be a long weekend...

    Hi all.

My last bike was a Virago but she was sold when we moved to Spain so I had 3 bikeless years and her indoors had 2 new leather settees for the living room. I say three bikeless years but it is really 4. I bought the xj in the UK last year and it was September before it reached me here in Spain.
There were issues getting her insured because she was UK registered so I could'nt ride her at all. Now I have her insured through a vintage bike club she won't run and I have only had 3 traumatic test runs totalling 3 kilometres. Bloody frustrating!!!!!
