hello everyone. my neighbor just gave me a 1985 maxim. the bike has not been run in 15 years. it has been in a garage and is in ok condition. so here i am looking for advice from the experts. 7k miles
    1. i am sure the bike was not stored properly so the carbs need rebuilding
2.i put some marvel mistery oil in the pistons to help loosen things up
    3. i cannot find the key code anywhere on any locks . do i need to pull the ignition to have a key made to fit???
    4. ANY SUGGESTIONS

    Welcome
    1) You are probably right, not many people store a bike prporely for extended periods.
    2) good thing, it will help unstick rings and lube valves
    3) lock # is on the cylinder, take it to a locksmith so he can make a key.
    4) lots of things to do before a ride.
Get a manual and read through it,
rebuild carbs and clean tank, install a fuel filter
    change plugs and airfilter
    change all fluids
rebuild front brakes, check rear shoes for delamination
    adjust valves
    get all lights working
repack bearings in steering head and rear swingarm
check wheel bearings, replace if needed
get new tires, they may look OK but old rubber is not safe
new battery and replace fuse block if needed
Clean and paint parts as you are working on them
    Sync carbs
I'm sure I missed something, you'll find it. Thats a list to get you started.

Just get a new ignition off Ebay. I paid $25 plus shipping for the ignition on my 550 Seca.

Take the lock to a Yamaha dealer, they might be able to help. Take off the helmet lock, there should be a number on there also.

Take the vin number and your tag receipt to a Yamaha dealership and they can cut you a new key.
