Bought an 82 maxim550 and I've put 200 miles or so on her. I was riding and the needle on my speedo went haywire, snapped the needle and now makes an ugly grinding noise. Called a repair shop to see if he speedometer could be done(specifically speedo repair shop) was told here was no way to fix these. Odometer and trip meter are still running fine but I don't know how to fix. If you have any ideas or know where I can get a speedometer or even one equivalent that could possibly slide in the housing without having to do any modification to restore her.

The shop you called just dosen't want to do the work. They can be repaired (there are even specialists that do nothing but repair Japanese motorcycle speedometers). Fitz will be along with the link to his how-to shortly, or you can search this site for it.

Not worth fixing. Too many used ones kicking around, and an easy swap-out on any XJ with "cluster" instruments such as your Max.

You could easily get rid of the 85mph unit; worse case you'd need to take a Dremel to the bottom of the instrument face and square it off to fit.

Fitz....he said it's a maxim, not a seca. So, it would be like the 650 maxim style.

Mozer, send a private message to me----I have a bunch of spare parts that I use for restoring clusters.......

Thank you all so much. Pictures were very helpful. The spring in the middle responsible for speedo bound itself up. Detached the spring as there was no saving it. Luckily the trip and odometer run off a different gear.

I know. Hence my mention of a Dremel. You can "convert" a round instrument into a Maxim-style "flat on the bottom" one by carefully trimming the bottom edge flat. Maxim clusters can be as nearly easily retrofit as the Seca cluster.
