Is there a way I can hotwire my bike to get it home without destroying the ignition or cutting wires? I loaned it to a buddy yesterday and when I came home I found it on the side of the road down the street. I have no key to it (he has the only one) and I have no money to get a new one made. It is sitting on a dangerous curve with NO shoulder so its pretty much forcing cars to go into the other lane and it wont last long before the cops turn it. Im sure I can get it running.. it "breaks down" on him all the time but I always get it going.. I dont know what hes doing wrong. Regardless I cant get ahold of him and I need to get the bike moved before it gets hit or towed. Please let me know exactly how to hotwire it without splicing into my ignition wired or destroying the ignition to get it turned on. Thanks

First, what bike do you have? This will ensure that the gouge I'm giving you doesn't fry your computer.
For my 81 650 Max, you can pull the ignition switch connector and short the fat Red (supplied 12V), fat Brown (return line), and the small blue together to get the system energized. This will allow you to use the starter button and get her home. Have at!

If it's "Just down the street" ...

Why don't you just PUSH the bike back home ... and, spare yourself all the Hot-wiring headaches???

Just down the street means like 1.5 miles in this case.... trust me its a long push. Anyway though it is home safe and sound. I found out where the keys were... they were stolen. The guy who left the bike on the side of the road left BOTH helmets strapped (not locked) on the bike and slipped the keys in the insulation in one of the helmets. SO I have no key to my bike or gas tank or the two cars that also had my only key on that ring or the three seperate locks on my crafstman tool box... I imagine this will cost me 300 bucks in getting replacement keys.. lesson learned.. keep spare keys even if youve never lost a key.. someone might.

On a side note.. im glad my carbs are a bit dirty.. whoever stole the helmet and keys also tried to get the bike but could not get it to start.. its a bit tricky when cold. They had it choked all the way but it never fired.. when I went and hotwired it it started right up so im not sure what the deal is.. maybe my faulty fuse box defended the bike.. no clue but its back at home and i only lost a few hundred bucks.. guess its parked till i can afford some new helmets.

That's what I was going to say, I think the lesson learned should be don't ever loan that "so called friend" your bike ever again.

Ditto. What a twit. If the bike is registered to you, getting new keys cut should run you less than $40. Have spares made and keep one at home as the master. And send your yutz friend the bill.

So he could have walked 1.5 miles to your place and left the keys and helmets there?

Robert "twit" would be letting him off lightly!

I mean Doh! How bloody thick can someone be???

Kavey, man send him the bill, it is the only way he will learn! Then again you could tell him you are the wallet inspector and have to take his to get it tested! (Tell him it was faulty and had made the $ go bad).

EDIT: oh and buy new locks for your bike, don't get keys made. There is some one local to you who knows what your bike looks like and has a full set of your keys!!! Send ya buddy the bill for that too.
