    I have a XJ 650 (RJ I THINK).
I am doing testing of the ignition circuit using the Haynes manual procedures.
I am looking for 700 ohms on each pickup coil, measured at the 4 pin connector at the CDI box.
The readings I am getting show no continuity, which would indicate both pickup coils are defective.

I question if I am testing correctly because I went to a known running bike and get the same test results.

Is there anyone that can comment or give advice on this?
Is there some other component (perhaps one not shown on the Haynes diagrams) that would prevent my being able to test continuity at the CDI plug?

They want you to measure the resistance at the plug near the coils, 700 ohm across the orange and blue and across the gray and blue but like it says, they probably are good unless they have been damaged. If you check the diagram however it shows the wires at the TCI to be red/white and orange andred/white and gray, not blue.

    Here we go Florida,
You are supposed to check across the Black to Orange and Black to Grey on the 6 pin connector on your TCI.
You should be reading the 700 ohms you mentioned.
You are reading out the ignition coil plug and will not see any continuity if you have the coils disconnected. Plug them in and you should see 2.5 ohms between the wires Steve pointed out.
Best of luck, remember it's the 6 pin connector.
