I picked up a 81 xj650 maxim. The forks have been replaced at some point with different forks. From what I have no Idea.Neither does the guy I bought it from. The problem is I cant find a brake caliper to fit it.Or a set of original forks.I have the original caliper. Is there anyway to determine what the forks came off of?Any Ideas?

Photograph the forks and caliper mounts and post them.

    I need Number-3!

You absolutely MUST provide some photographs.
None of us has a Crystal Ball ...

They look more like XS Forks.

    650 Special

They had that style of Fender Mount and Caliper Mounting arrangement on the 1982 650 Special with the Adjustable Preload End Cap and Dual Front Disc Brakes.

Look under the Rubber Cap at the top of the Fork Tube.
If there's a big "Screw Slot" with "More ~ Less" stamped there ... that's them!

There is no more or less under there.Has a flat metal tab,and under it has different slots that form a flower petal pattern?Like you could adjust them.

The XS forks had an air-adjustable damping valve setup on them. I'm not sure about preload...

Not all of them Robert. I have three XS 1100's and only 1 is air adjustable. The other two have the screws like Ricks description.

As for the ID of the forks, I'm afraid I couldn't pick them as anything specific. They look exactly the same as the 550 and 650 front ends I have. The only possible difference being spacing on the caliper mounts which on Yamaha's of that age, were all pretty similar.

The hardest part is there are very few part numbers on forks to get an exact ID from.

Thanks for the update, I'm afraid I've only played with 2 XS's in the last 25 years. Limited venue.

Is there a cross over tube on the top front of the forks? And a air valve on the left side. Also are there places on the top of the forks where there was or is a plastic cap was or is supposed to be?. Looks like my 82xj750 front end with a xs front wheel.

Mine didn't have a crossover, you just had to get the air pressure just right (like that would ever happen).

Picked up the front end today.Got home, and it fit perfect.Even though it cam from a 1980 KZ550.Used the forks, wheel, and brake system.Didn't have to change the fork brackets. And they we're 4" longer. With lowering the bike 4" in the rear, and using these forks gave it a chopper style stance. And rides very good, handles well at higher speeds.Biut this was all I could find on short notice.Had to have brakes,I drive it daily in Atlanta Ga traffic. And now I wont keep sucking the seat cover up every time a cage pull's out in front of me!I'll post pic's this weekend. Thanks for all the help.
