    Hi,

I have a 1986 Maxim X that has been standing indoors for about a week.
It ran when I put it inside, nut now a week later: no spark....

I already sprayed the ignition lock with contact spray, but it didn't help....

    Any thoughts?

    Pat

    Check fusebox? Battery status?

Can ignition coils die from standing around????

I get 12V on all leads to the coils, but no spark on either coils.....

Will swamp TCI units tomorrow, but I don't think the problem lies there....as the coils are provided with 12V...

Adrian1 is right. Check the battery. It probably has just enough power to turn the motor but not enough to fire the coils. Charge your battery, switch the petcock to "prime" for a minute or so, to refill the float bowls, & try again. In any case, a trickle charger is always a good investment. Good luck.

12 volts not likely the issue, you need the amps. I've had same problem and finally went to new battery and trickle charge when not riding. Starts every time. I likely have a slow leak/discharge that I cannot locate. (wish I could find the leak!) good luck.

Problem is that even with a full booster pack (780A) connected to the battery, there is no spark.

Primary coil resistance is at 3.6 Ohm for both coils.

Battery is a brand new Yuasa.

I'll swap the tci unit, as soon as i get it back from my colleague who borrowed it some time ago...maybe there is something wrong with the one that's on the bike right now...

Come to think of it, could a bad mass lead from the battery to the frame cause something like this?

Check the fuses & their holders. Sometimes everything can look good but still not making good contact. If the bike still has its original fusebox, consider upgrading to a "blade style" fusebox. Its easy & inexpensive, & will probably help prevent future problems.

While you're waiting for the other TCI, try installing a fresh set of spark plugs. Can't hurt & they're cheap. Electrical problems can be frustrating, keep posting of your progress & hopefully some other members will join in with more ideas/advice.

If you don't already have a manual for your bike, now would be a good time to get one. Then you'll have a wiring diagram to work with. Hang in there.

Fuses look good, no rust on contacts
The other TCI didn't do the trick...

I suspect the pick up coil at the moment, will measure them up this evening. Anybody know how to only get the actual magnets, in stead of the $300 + coil assembly?

I have the repair manual here, but I can't read a diagram...

    Problem solved!

Turns out it was the ignition cut-off relay....

Pulled it and the bike fired up instantly.....slammed it against the wall and it worked again.

Better put a wall in your back pack when you go riding again, just in case it stops on you and there are no walls around!

You can pull it apart and use electrical lube and get it to work better. I had to tap it the first couple of times with my 82 xj750. Still may take the time to take it apart and clean and lube it.
