OK I was wondering if anyone could help me figure out the following: I like the Memphis Shades "Big Shot" and "Alley Cat" Metric sportshields and want to buy one or the other (so any opinion on which of these is better is welcome as well).

The look and Quality of these windshields are very nice. However, the '82 XJ650 Maxim is not listed as compatible. I very much like the quick release trigger FORK MOUNTS that can be purchased on these Memphis Shades Sportshields.

Does anyone have one of these shields and does the fork mounting hardware work with a stock '82 XJ650 Maxim?? If so could you tell me which hardware to order along with the shield??

Just hoping somebody has already been through this before I buy and return etc, etc. My 2nd choice is a Slipstreamer Spitfire (handle bar mount) which I know will work if I can't figure this out.

    any feedback greatly appreciated!!! Thanks.

Well...not exactly your version of the Memphis Shades, but I did get a Memphis shade shield for my Maxim-X. There are advantages and disadvantages to the fork mounts they sell. First off they are of course metal. So that puts you in a metal-to-metal mounting on your forks. I discovered the mounts will, over time, loosen and move a little and can mar the finish of your forks. What you'll need to do is find some very thin (and I mean thin) foam material (or something similar) to fit between the mount and your fork to provide a soft barrier. I think what I used was some small strips of window weather seal with the sticky side stuck to the inside of the mounts. Worked well. The other thing I had to do (though the memphis shades site didn't advise so) was to buy a turn signal relocation kit. The shade and my signals interfered with each other. You won't find a kit specifically for the Maxim-X so I used one for a Virago that had the same fork diameter. You might need to take a similar approach.

None of this advice is specifically related to your bike per se, but the problems I had to resolve are something you will likely encounter with this brand.

thanks Artie - all good to know. I see your bike is listed as compatible for a Memphis Shades Fats/slim mount - is that the kind of shield you have?? I may just try the hardware kit for that hoping that our front ends are similar enough for the kit to work. the hardware kits are $100 so I was hoping someone had already been through this with an 1980 - 1983 XJ

    thanks again,
