HELP

So I just cleaned my carbs, checked the valves, they are in spec, synced and tuned, The only way it will start is if I boost it, Battery wont stay charged and its a brand new battery, So when the bike is running It runs good but when i start to go anywhere it cuts in and out, bogs real hard, Lights dim and then go brighter then dim again, anyways I was wondering if someone had an idea where to start, ive checked the fuses and wires, sorry for the dumb question, still new to working on my own bikes Bike is a 1982 xj 1100

 

Alternator, brushes/wiring; connections at regulator/rectifier; fusebox.

 

Load test the battery? I recently picked up a new battery that was junk

 

Ive never checked the alternator on a bike before, Easy hard ? ?

 

Easy but you need a manual before you go much further.

 

UPDATE- Altenator rebuilt, Bike wont start and is still giving me that bog and its cutting out, The only way i can start it is if I boost it, Once started the bike will sit there and idle but will kinda run like sh**, Once I turn the bike off I cant start it again, It will sit there and make a clicking noise, Any Ideas what I should be checking next? Thanks guys

 

Have you tested the battery itself?

 

Yes the battery is brand new and it checks out good

 

Do you have a manual yet? You're going to need to troubleshoot the regulator/rectifier and associated wiring.

 

Yep, I found the problem, It was a broken wire in the headlight case shorting out, She runs like a champ now, thanks for all the help
