Hey all - First timer w/ a big problem

Hey everyone, been trolling these forums for a while now and now i have the need of your collective wisdom ;-)

I have a 81 XJ750 SECA that i bought last year, not running. The gas tank was rotted and was sitting there for a few years.. Only paid 200$ so I figured it'd be a good project. I got a new gas tank from ebay - but the petcock was shot... So i got one of them on order from MikesXS ;-)

I tried to get it started, and It wouldn't fire - so I figured the carbs were shot. So using Rick's 'Old School' howto - I just tore the carbs off and started to break them down. Into my third float bowl I ran into a problem that I doubt can be fixed, one of the POSTS that holds the pin for the float is broken, its actually snapped off at the base - as soon as I took the float bowl off - it fell out...... Now I asume there is no way to fix that and I have to buy a new set of carbs.....i HOPE there is a way to fix t and some one knows how here ;-)

So being negative, what is a good price for new carbs?? Can i use xj650 carbs on this bike? there is an auction on ebay for 650 carbs that were taken from a running bik and its going for 150$ currently - is that good?? If it shoots up to 200$ that still good? ;-P

Kinda a newbie at bike work - but don't mind getting my hands dirty - any and all help appreciated!

If you are a little handy, just get another carb body and swap it out.

I can get a set of carbs all day long for $125 or less at the junkyard...

650 carbs are the same, however all the jet sizes are different. You will have to swap out all the jets.

the only reason i was thinking of the 150$ carbs is because they were working ;-)

So, if I pick up junk pair on ebay the body i sthe same? and just use the pieces from this set of carbs?

Hey Josh, I have some good used carb bodies available if you just need to replace one carb.....send me a PM.

 

Try our "buy-sell" forum. You need the #3 carb from 650 or 750, Maxim or Seca. I think even a #2 body would work with a throttle plate swap. There's gotta be somebody with a spare carb.

I came across aluminum brazing rods at a car show, and bought 'em. This guy was "welding" broken bits of aluminum together, then hammering them, and not breaking the "weld". If you want to try this, call around to local welding supply shops. Bring your clean carb, the broken bit, and $20 , you might get lucky!

 

I've heard tell that those posts can be JB Welded back into place. IIRC, there was even a picture of one that was fixed on here somewhere... Might as well try it. The JB Weld will only cost you around 6 bucks and the carb ain't gonna get any more broke than what you got now.

Ran into another problem anyways, ;-(... looks like someone tried to clean these carbs before, 2 of the jets (not the main jets, the other ones) are stripped ;-/.. gotta try to figure out how to get them off now.

I second the JB get the regular tho not the quick IMO it holds better but takes longer to set properly, There isn't much stress on that post when in operation.

 

I was just going to ask which one would you guys choose?? ;-)

I was thinking the 'WATERWELD' one, as it specifically calls out its safe for gas based installations..

the top one use that. When i first got my bike there was three broken posts. I used the JB weld and have never had a problem

 

Good deal, going out of town for the rest of this week/weekend - but will let you all know if I run into any problems, or if it works like a charm ;-) (might help others to know)

I just went through a set of carbs and I couldn't get some of the jets out. I used a Dremel tool and cut a deeper slot in them so my screwdriver could actually torque them a little bit without sliding out and gouging them. However you would have to get new jets them I would think. Mine were garbage anyways but Chacal sells them at a resonable price. Just be careful so you don't cut into the carb bodies.

 

Ya i was thinking about breaking out my dremel.. will be a project for next week..

I broke the top part of my body when I was trying to get a screw off the carbs. I thought I was screwed being it was a maxim x. I jb welded it, waited 24 hours and you would never know it has been repaired. Runs sweet and with no issues

 

I had the same problem on my carbs, the float hinge post was broken exactly like yours...i JB-welded it right up, and its held for about a year so far. I've noticed that the JB weld has changed color, but so far, the gasoline doesn't seem to be weakening it at all...

 

One of Mine I JB welded in about 1990 lasted no probs and bike was parked in late 93 (and ignored ..ouch). Have carbs apart now and is still holding, but i think i'm gonna redo it, plus drill a few tiny holes on each pice and add a wire stich/staple under the jb weld across the break on each side.
