    Hello all,

Just wanted to introduce myself. 35 Years old from NS, Canada. Just bought my first bike - an 81 Yamaha XJ650 Maxim. I'm hoping to learn enough about bike to work on it myself.

Can anyone point me towards a good beginner site/book, etc for someone learning bikes from scratch? I have the Haynes manual for my bike, but it's aimed at a little high for me.

    E

This site will answer most issues that you may encounter. The XJChat forum is where most technical issues are discussed. You can search for a topic or start your own thread with topic title that explains your needs. Clymer also have a fairly good manual that is easy to follow.

On 2 wheels... just lost my hat.
you may want to consider the XJ CD... it is the most comprehensive manual for these bikes ever assembled.

hey eman, I just got my first bike, exactly the same as yours. I'm also hoping to work on my bike so hopefully we can trade notes. I had some problems and got stranded a few hours ago, fortunately I was near a free internet connection, asked for help here, and got well sorted. TIMEtoRIDE recommended I do this to check for the cause:

It looks doable so I am going to try to go through with it this weekend. I'm just leery of really messing something up because I don't have any other way of getting around.

Welcome from the left coast, eman. This site is awesome for guys like you (and me) trying to figure out how to work on these bikes.

So many smart and friendly people here.

Hope you get some time to ride out in NS before your winter (and your dreaded "ice fog") rolls in...

You have the Haynes and chance you also have the Clymer?

Always on the look out to see where my old bike went :(

I ditto the XJCD if you can find it.

You can get most questions answered here... there is also an XJ mailing list but I found that too busy.

I do have the Hanes manual. It 's useful, but for someone who doesn't even know all the part of the bike, it's a little above me for some things. When it says unscrew the doohicky - I need to see a picture of the doohicky in order to find it....

Is the Clymer manual more illustrative?

From memory I can't remember them being much different... one was green and I think one was silver.

I tended to read the book to get an idea, and just have at it :D

I think you'll pick it up... there is a bit of a learning curve, but if you first understand what the part does, you can then figure out how it works... then you can figure out if it is broken :D

If you are unsure... then you might want a wrenching buddy, or at least someone to use a camera.

Woohoo another one joins... getting to be a few of us,
Still see a few XJ's out and about as well....

I have a actual Yammy Service manual for my 400.....
Though they sometimes don't give you all the info you would like....
