I'm not a big forum guy, but this site is too cool!

Here's my bike - the usual story: Found it in a barn; bought it for $400; did a bunch of custom work with more planned. It's an XJ650J.

Hi Steve, welcome to XJBikes :)

Good find there, I look in all the barns round here but have never found a XJ in any of them only cows and chickens! ;)

Hope you enjoy your stay, ride safe.

Very well, thank you. I had our local in-line mechanic check it out when I got it inspected right after the purchase. "Just run it!" he said. The bike had one owner, with 18K miles on it. He was a fairly conservative rider, though I can tell from the right gear-case cover that he was down once or twice ... :? He seemed to follow maintenance schedules from what I can see.

I changed the oils - engine, gearbox and drive - and recently checked the valve clearances. They're about 0.001" under, but I'm not getting much above 4K RPM on these back roads, so I'll get them back into spec at my leisure.

It seems to be one reliable and well-made bike. Funny thing was, I didn't go out looking for an XJ. I was just motorcycle shopping as my response to our oil addiction - just doing my part, you know - when I came across this bike. Cross checking against totalmotorcycle's most reliable bikes list, there it was, so I bought it!

I may buy other bikes, but I don't think I'll be selling this one ...

If you are at all like me you'll put a lot of s-miles on with this bike. Never having owned a Yamaha before this one, I often think to myself "Why?"I've owned one of almost every brand and type of bike made including a harley and a BSA. As they say you never go back.
