Just joined the forum, thought appropriate to introduce myself. My name is Lee, I am looking at 30 this summer, I live in Virginia Beach, I am an engineer and I work on boats for a living. I am gracing your presence because I have just started a project in my spare time involving an xj650 with a bad motor and good title, and an xj550 with a good motor but no title. I've built a couple bikes but never a Yamaha and never anything with a shaft. I have a few questions...

    1. The xj650 is shaft drive (and appears to have a great rear end) and the xj550 is chain drive. I want to put the 550 motor into the 65o frame. How difficult is it to swap over the swing arm from the 550 with the motor, is that a huge headache with the wider frame? Any input welcome!!

    2. Where do you recommend getting new replacement parts for these online. Looking for some where with a pretty complete catalog so I can bulk order everything I need at once.

    Cheers!

welcome to the forum. I think you are taking on an impossible task. you would be better off to find a running 650 or 750 engine to put on the 650 frame.

Don't do it.... You'll get so mad and frustrated that you'll never get to riding.

Get a good engine, and you'll be light years ahead.

As far as parts, we have parts and a catalog available to you right here... Either contact Chacal ( see post above) or click on the "xj4ever" logo at the top right corner of your screen.

Fair enough, looks like I can source an engine for the 650 pretty reasonably, then I can leave the 550 as a complete bike and have twice the fun. Regarding swap candidates, I see the 750 is popular, are the slightly more modern 700's possible as well? I see one for sale locally for $300, I might pull the trigger if it will mount up. Another option I have is rebuilding the 650, I know it needs a timing chain and the pistons look like hell, I'd probably spend double that on parts and specialty tools. Thanks guys!
