I am new to the Yamaha sceene. I have a 1982 XJ750 Maxim. It seems to be running ok, a little cold blooded but once she s warmed up it idles fine. My question is when I am on the road and get up to about 60mph the RPMS are at about 5 - 6000. Is that normal because it seems a bit high to me?

I was under the impression the seca and max shared the same engine, anyway my seca turns about 4000 around 60mph

Thanks for the tip, I was actually updating as I was waiting for a reply. Is yours a turbo? I was thinking it might be a bit high because my brother has a Kawasaki 750 Vulcan that sits at about 4500 RPMs at 60mph and mine is sitting in between 5500 and 6000.

I am running it in fifth. I just got the bike this week and have not had a chace to give it a tune up or check the carbs yet. Will have to take a look into why the RPMs are so high. I have only been able to put 12 miles on it but plan on a lot more. It is a fun little snappy bike.

A 750 Maxim will run about 60mph at 5K. A 750 Seca will run about 65mph at 5K. The only difference is the rear wheel size. The Maxims have a 16" rear wheel, with a 130 tire. The Secas have an 18" rim, with a 120 tire. The overall wheel diameter (with tire) is roughly 1 1/4" larger on the Seca.

I put the smaller 16" wheel on my Seca just so I could have a wider rear tire. Interesting, though, my gas mileage didn't change much.

Looks like most of it was just needing to get some old gas out. I have about 50 miles on it now and ran some sea foam in it and she is purring like a kitten, hitting 60mph at 5k on the rpm gauge. Thanks for all the imput everyone, you guys and this site rocks!
