    Hi,
I have a XJ700X and when I come to a stop it tachs around 3000. How do I adjust it so it is lower. I'm afraid when I start up from a stop the bike is going to take off from under me.
    thanks
    Ric

Adjust the idle screw back. You may need to sync your carbs as well. A lean mix can cause this too.

To elaborate a bit: Try adjusting the main idle knob (under the center of the bank of carbs) counter-clockwise to lower the overall idle.

If that does NOT work, then you are more than likely in need of carb service; which involves a lot more than just a sync and also requires valve clearances be in spec beforehand; and may ultimately be necessary to correct the issue.
