Hi just after how I jump my 83 xj900 as when I push Starr button can hear ticking noise under seat each time I push it but that's all.
I have hooked up battery charger as don't have battery yet thought it might of been starter pulled out and hooked it to charger and it spun freely and when wheeled it into shed I bumped it into gear and it coughed.
Any help would be great thanks.

I can tell you how I jump start my bikes....often times if I don't have a battery in the bike I'll just hook jumper cables up to either my lawn tractor or car (NEVER HAVE THE VEHICLE BEING USED FOR THE JUMP RUNNING!), use that for the host battery.

Put your bike in neutral, put the ignition switch in the on position and the kill switch to run. Use a old screwdriver to jump the two post on the solenoid. If it doesn't start do what patman said.

Do not run the bike with out a battery it will damage the voltage regulater.

+1. The battery is not an optional accessory. You must have one installed.

I missed the not having a battery in the bike bit. I was referring to using a non-running vehicle to jump start.
