    Hey all,

I need to remove the center stand from my XJ700XN. I got under there and saw two bolts attached to the vertical supports. I took those off and noticed that there is a tight spring connecting the stand to a peg under the bike (makes sense). Do I need to remove the spring? Or do I need to remove something higher up in the bike? I didn't want to mess with the spring because it looks like it might be VERY difficult to put back on, once I get it off.

Can anyone confirm/advise regarding my next step?

    Thanks!

The spring and the two bolts should be the only things keeping the centerstand on. Be careful with the spring though, as it's quite strong and can propel itself in the direction of something expensive, or worse yet, something that can feel pain.

I haven't worked on that exact bike, but those springs are hard to take off and on without unbolting the mainstand. Make sure the stand is in the up position and remove the nuts and bolts.

To install, hook the spring up first, then position the stand. You can use smaller bolts to help with locating and fighting the spring, then install the regular ones.

Thanks for the replies. My dad shared with me an old school trick. I extended the center stand to the floor, but didn't raise the bike, then I shoved metal washers in between the coils while it was semi-extended. I put about 8 washers in there. After that, I raised the stand and the spring couldn't retract all the way, giving me just enough slack to remove it, and place it back when I re-installed the center stand.

    Neat!
