OK I want to know what the proper proceeder is for checking the timing.
The timing marks for the chain are perfect. Its the procedure for the ignition timing I need. It takes about 4 to 6 attempts to start before the engine keeps running and doesn't quit.
Also I need to get a new battery, what would be the best maintenance free battery I could get for my 83 XJ750 I want high cranking amps.

Slap a timing light on the #1 plug lead, point it at the plate and see what you get. Not 100% sure what mark it will (or won't) line up with; the advance chart is in the manual. Since there's no "adjustment" per se (it's either right or broke) it's more a matter of confirming.

    Valves in spec?

OK thanks Fitz. I do have a timing light. I figure my problem is more of a need fresh gas and new plugs deal, but I figure I should check the timing also. Yes valves in speck. Changed last summer.

When the dots on the cams are lined up the letter T on the rotor should be lined up with the timing mark pointer of course thats if the timing mark pointer has not been bent or moved . To check the timing mark pointer get #1 piston top dead center cams should be on their marks the letter T should line up perfectly on the timing mark pointer. If you do put the timing light to it at idle the U shape should be lined up with the timing mark at idle as you rev the engine the letter U will move away from the mark as the electronic timing advance kicks in if you have one of the advance timing lights you can rotate the knob on it to get the Letter T back on the pointer and then you will be able to read how much advance you are getting at different RPM's. Fun Fun Fun
