I have a 1982 SECA-550 and I need to take the master cylinder apart to rebuild it. However, I don't know how to disassemble it. Any suggestions?

Under the rubber boot is a snap ring you need to remove. It's easy after that.

Under the rubber boot that covers the brake lever pivot that is. Take the lever off by removing the bolt and nut, shine a flashlight in where the lever pushes the piston and you should see a snap ring, it is advised to remove the brake fluid before you remove the piston or you'll have brake fluid all over the place. Pay attention to the direction the piston seals are facing.

To elaborate; there's an internal retaining ring, quite deep into the bore. Once that's out, the "guts" come right out.

Be sure to inspect the bore for corrosion, pitting or "galling" and make sure all of the tiny holes in the M/C are clean; there is one in the bottom of the reservoir in one of the "false" drillways and it is TINY. One bristle from your parts-cleaning brush tiny.

Fitz, Do you know if the 650 maxim is the same? Just wondering.

Yes the handle bar mount master cylinders will all follow the same routine.

The only only style master cylinders that may differ are the 750 Seca remote mount, and the rear disc master cylinders. Even those have some means of retaining the plunger.

I believe Gamuru did a write up on rebuilding the master cylinder. Look for it in the FAQ section.
