I've only had my 1980 XJ650 for a few months now, but have'nt had a chance to ride it due to the need of repair.

Im just curious about it because, i've hered that thiese bikes can really move, although the speedo only goes up to 85 mph on my bike.

Is 85 mph what i should expect from my XJ650 after i get her up and going?

i have a XJ 550 and it will do 110-115 tops. Its actually a lot more fun to ride below 85 though because thats when they really perform. When you get goin above that the acceleration peters off. But still a lot of fun.

110-115 ha, thats not bad, dont plan on going that fast though, atleast knowing i can is nice. I just dont want to hit 85 mph and the thing to turn into a big turd. Yeah my brother had one of those 1 cylinder Suzuki 650's that would only get up to 80 mph.

I've had my XJ-750 Max up to 80
    Several times.
I wish I knew how fast I was really going.

I remember, this one time, i got going so fast the front tire burst into flames just before stretching into another reality just ahead of me.
I had it wide open and was dying to get a look at what was on the other side of the Warp, but couldn't get anymore power out of it 'cause I was runnin' on regular gas.

I'm curious about the same :D. New i think the 650s were good for ~120 Mph. On a bike without a fairing that has to feel more like 300 haha! All i know is that my 650 has enough pep to straighten my elbows, which is all i was looking for performance wise... C'mon spring!!!

Top end for the XJ650 was a claimed 127mph; for the 550s about 115.

Since all Yamaha mechanical speedometers are basically the same (some subtle differences) swaps such as this are possible:

NOS XJ900 (I think) speedo in XJ550 Seca cluster.

I like to know how fast I'm going.

i have a 550, and id say "fast enough" then again i have only been riding a few weeks. It accelerates to 60 quicker than my old firebird did, and i have got it up to 80 and it still had plenty left, and weigh close to 300. I start feeling unsafe past 70, this bike seems to like 60-65 for cruising.

The fastest I ever traveled on mine was 105.

I'm actually really interested in finding out the top end on this thing. Anyone taken a stock xj 700 to the limit?

Cool guages there (bigfitz52) yeah im planning on a better set for mine when i get closer to completion, just have to figure out who has a good speedo @ tach for my 1980 XJ650.

Your set up is really clean looking and all, but was thinking about placing mine down by the tank.

i have had my 550 up to about 125mph

was running off road fuel :) and had a slight tail wind

leaded gas makes these bikes happy but run lean
