How important is the RH crank case cover?

The more I work on my bike (82 XJ650 RJ) the more problems I find, I'm just about ready to throw in the towel... I have the engine completely disassembled to fix second gear and I found out I seem to be missing a large piece of the crank case at the right hand cover. I don't know how I missed this before, but it definitely seems to have happened before I got the bike as I've never had it on the road and there is evidence that it happened some time ago. It seemed to be running fine before I tore it down, so my question is how important is the right hand crank case cover? Do I need to get a new crank case?

It looks like thats the outside, I can't imagine it would be a problem.

Tape the inside of the crack, then a couple coats of JB weld on the outside...done!

That's the best news I've had in a while regarding my bike. Thanks for your help guys, especially the JB weld idea Danno, I'll pick some up on the way home tonight.

Maybe I can get it on the road this summer... just maybe!

Do like the man said ... JB-it!

Use a Sure-Form Blade and sculpt the outside pattern before the JB Weld cures-up solid and you'll be able to make that chip all but disappear.

If you remove the Oil Gallery Cap below that blem to do forming and sanding; be careful putting it back on.

They are marshmallow-soft cast aluminum ... NOT Billet ... and will break if you sneeze on the damn thing.
Use some thread locker and take-it-up by hand.

No worries, you can run it as-is.
