Hi All, Very first post to the forum. I used to have an XJ900 many years ago and have seen it's smaller btrother an XJ750R for sale locally. The only issue is, it has about 95,000 miles on the engine. My question is can I expect to do major engine work soon? Or could I say get another 20,000 miles out of it if treated kindly? To my knowledge the motor has not been opened at all and runs fine. Regards Glyn New Zealand.l

One question comes to mind. Are you sure that it is miles, and not Kilometers? If the outside ring of the speedo is marked KPH the reading would be in kilometers.
Get a compression test on the motor to get a good indication of what the condition of the rings, and valves are in.
Regular maintenance goes a long way towards making a motor last. Does the seller have the maintenance records?

If the bike was well cared for, I don't see why you couldn't get many more miles out of it. as mentioned above. However, if the engine has not been opened at all, chances are that you will need to be replacing things soon-ish. Things like the primary chain guide require the cases to be split to replace, and seem to wear based on age as much as mileage. The life of that one may have been prolonged since it doesn't seem like it did much sitting! My bike only had around 23k miles on it when I needed to replace the guide (and starter clutch) I think you could very well get 20k more without much hassle, or you could get down the road and need major repairs. It's kind of a crap shoot, but so is any used vehicle when you get down to it. I guess if the price was right I would certainly consider it!

Unless you know the previous owner ... don't assume anything. Agree with all the posts compression check with throttle held wide open, check valve adjustment... if all good your engine should be good. If it runs doggy then indication, valves, and or carbs need full rebuild ( do not go half way break rack replace ALL rubber and gaskets, while your at it replace all the UJ screws and put metric Phillips or Allen screws back in ) Do a bench synch and a running synch and your XJ should be happy.

I got my 83 750 with 3k miles I put another hard and I mean hard 100k on it before I got the dreaded second gear slip rode it another 5k before swapping it for my 650 , if the dogs didn't get worn from shifting without a clutch I'd be willing to say 150k is average which is absolutely amazing for a 30+y/o bike
