Congratulations on your XJ! If you like to wrench you will love your XJ. That is both a positive and negative statement.

Your first purchase after buying your XJ should be a service manual. I only have a Haynes manual as of yet, but I have not had the bike all that long either. A service manual will help you find such answers as yours without waiting hours for a response, which on busy days may never come!

Now, to answer your question, the mark on the side of the bike by the oil cover says 2.5L, the manual says 2.35L if you aren't changing the filter, and 2.65L if you need to fill the filter as well. You can get at least 3L and look at the sight glass while you are filling it.

2.5L is 2.65 quarts, but if you are using a oil that is still in quarts, you might want to check to see if it is the right kind of oil. When I bought Castrol for my bike, it was already in liters. You should NOT use regular motor oil in your bike.

Oil capacity is that little number followed by "CM3" cast into your clutch cover right by the filler.

You can go 200-300CCs over, to keep the low oil level sensor happy during acceleration. NO MORE or you'll fill your airbox with oil.

There is a sight glass on the lower side of the clutch cover. With the bike on the centerstand, you want the level in the window just above the marks, but with a "bubble" still showing at the top.

On the sidestand, there will be NO OIL showing; this is normal. Bike needs to be vertical when checking oil.

2.8 quarts, but have bike on center stand, and start checking and
pouring slow after the second quart. You should see just a small
bubble of air at the top of the sight glass. Then run it, and check
    it again.

Of course we can still buy quarts! The metric system is too easy, if we were to use it we would be the most powerful country in the world.

Besides, 1L = 1.05 quarts, so in this small amount it really wouldn't make much of a difference.

And it is 2.65 liters, or 2.8 quarts, so taboo was correct. 2.8 L would overfill it, but only by 4.56 imperial dessertspoons.

    *sigh* silly Canadians.. ;)

This is an opinion. I will council that you can use it so long as it satisfies the API rating and is NOT energy conserving. I've been using Castrol GTX for decades without issue. Mind you I did this after I contacted both Pennsoil and Castrol about the use of automobile oil in motorcycles. Both companies said that there is no harm in it but that motorcycle oil has special additives in it intended for wet clutch/shared sump systems found on motorcycles. Use your judgment on this.
    Good luck.
