I've tried putting it in second gear but it won't let me it goes back to neutral, tried it in First. And nah it doesn't work. What Youtube Magic is at work that make it look so easy.

does it let you put it in third?
sounds like you have a shifter problem, weak or broke springs, possibly a broken chain guide (hope not)
what kind of maxim you talking about?

Agreed, sounds like something else is going on, when my battery was heading south I was able to do the 'crab walk' and pop the clutch in 1st gear and start it.

When was the last time it started/ ran?

What seems to be happening in first that is preventing it from starting the bike? Does it not turn over, does it start and immediately die? Something else? I am not questioning your intelligence here, but is the kill switch on?

I'll admit, one time I did it once with the kill switch on. I was starting to think the bike had something that wouldn't allow me to put it in second to pop start it. It's an xj650 Maxim by the way. I run as frequently as I can, about four times a week. It does have starter clutch problem, that "rattle-can of rocks sound"; that's why I'm trying to add pop starting the bike to my repertoire. Thanks to your support by the way. The bike just doesn't seem to turn over, I even did it on a hill once, swayed back, got some speed, released the clutch, hit the starter, and nothing, just a screeching halt.

    Try 2nd or 3rd gear.

^ what he said. If it gives you a hard time ststaying in gear, try to rock the bike forward a little bit to see if it catches. I personally wouldn't bother with trying to hit the starter, but I was having starter clutch issues last year and had to remove my starter motor completely. I spent most of last riding season pop starting my bike, ha ha.

I think you really need to do the guide-ectomy. The bike should not be coming to a screeching halt on a downhill in any gear.

    What they ^ said and...
    Bump start your bike:
Bike in neutral (green light showing).
    Kickstand up.
    Kill switch to run.
Pull the clutch all the way in and hold it.
Roll the bike to build speed.
When you have a good roll going punch the shifter into first gear and blip the throttle.
    Your bike should start.
Important: The clutch lever should be held all the way in at all times during the process. The bike will "jump" momentarily when it starts. Don't get excited and let out the clutch lever.

I feather the clutch a bit after shifting into first. Makes the engine spin more better.

So do i. I actually feather the clutch and roll the throttle but because he's new to doing it I don't want the bike to take off without him.

What about fixing the starter so you don't have to push start?

Or jumping the solenoid post to verify it's not the problem.

Even if it starts he should rebuild the starter. Less worries later.
