I pride myself in keeping my 85 Maxim spotless, she gets cleaned and polished almost every time I ride her, however my Exhaust in in dire need of help. I doubt they are chrome underneath all the rust, what can I do to make my pipes look like new again? I was thinking about taking them off, sanding and painting with some High temp black paint.

I had the same issue. My first step was to apply Never Dull. That took a lot of the rust off. The next step is to take some light weight oil and 0000 steel wool. Some of the pitting remains, however they look much better.

Polishing should clan off the rust and let the pittd chrome shine. If not then you can us header paint to make them match the frame, or head to Ebay for better set.

Anyone ever had the mufflers (silencers) refurbished? The mufflers on my Turbo are in okay shape, but do have some rust and need to be sanded and repainted. Can you actually have them dipped and/or stripped, repainted and reused?

Well they look somewhat better after 2 hrs with my drill and a wire wheel, don't know if I will get them looking like Chrome, but they are better than what they were. I will keep working at them.

There are a few plating shops around that will still deal with exhausts. The only way to find one is to start calling. You might get lucky and find a local plating shop that will do the job. Exhausts are tricky because they require a bit more cleaning than most pieces, and if they aren't totally clean they will contaminate the plating tank.
