I have an 82 XJ650 Maxim. It's been sitting in a nice warm AZ garage for a few years... Okay 20 to be exact. I'm patiently waiting on my service manual to arrive... I've read the forums on how to clean my carbs... but I'm stuck because my diaphragm pistons don't seem to want to budge... help ?

I'd get some Penetrating oil and spray it on the slide needle and around the slide. Keep them oiled down and see if they come loose. Dont pry up on them with anything metal as you could mess them up.

You dont want to be dropping the whole carb into carb cleaner as you'll ruin the throttle seals not to mention the diaphrams!

Release the Main Jets and be sure that the Needle isn't stuck inside the Emulsion Tube.

Invert the Carbs and Spray the Pistons with a copious amount of Carb Cleaner.
Don't pry on them with anything metal.
You don't want to mar the finish.

For particularly stubborn cases, I use a WOODEN Hammer Handle and pry the Piston up from the open side.
Bathe those Pistons in Carb Cleaner.

You'll be wanting to do a Piston Bore refinishing on those 20 year old carbs, anyway!
