Bike isn't running and I'm waiting for new ignition coils. I was wondering if it would be possible to use a DVOM to test the TCI unit.

    Thanks.

Maybe someone else knows. I wanted to find a way to test the one on my virago and there was no known way to test them. Maybe someone that lives close to you on here has one you can try? Did you ohm out your coils and your pickup coils if they ohm out ok then it has to be your TCI Best of luck

You'd think, ... with as many Boxes as they have out-there, that There would be a Kiosk at the Dealership, ... where you could bring-in your Bikes CDI's, TCI's and Voltage Regulators ... plug 'em in and have the Test Station tell you precisely what condition your condition was in.

Our generation is the one that used to have to take-off the back of the TV abd see which Vacuum Tubes weren't glowing and take them to a grocery store where there was a Tube Tester!!

The Testing of a TCI is just about limited to seeing if the Bike will run on a TEST TCI that is known to be good.

I ended up just putting a test light on the leads going from the TCI to the ignition coiled. It flickered quite nicely :) Was a bit dim, but I can't read too much into that.

1 wire to the coil is battery power i think 1the other wire is orange the other is brown dont quote me on the colors they should only show about 1.5 volts The orange wire also runs the tach . Borroe a meter and check them and ohm test everything pick ups and coils you can buy a cheap meter less then 20 bucks. In the long run it will save you money replacing parts isn't cheap .

81-83 750 and 82-83 650 all use the same TCI according to yamaha website

One of our more senior members, ... "robert" ... is a TCI Eltronic-surgeon.

It would be worth your trouble to contact -- robert -- and get his recommendations about what to do with a suspected bad TCI.

i never did test the second TCI, my bad, i'll get it this weekend
without looking at the book, i think the coils are always hot and the TCI puts a ground on to fire them

That would be correct; TCI breaks the ground.

Polock, I will test mine as well and post the values on that thread. Mine seems to be the same model, but in the place where yours has "107" mine as "101".

Hi yes it ticks over fine it's just when you take the bike out onto the road it seems OK to start with as going down the road it just cut's out,,I've changed the fuel tap just had my carbs done so I know it's not them,I've looked at the stator that's fine as to why it just run's out off fuel has me baffled..
